Stern replacing Conan?

Gadzooks, can it be? Could NBC - the network that once fired Howard Stern - actually be courting the morning radio guy for another job? Possibly.

Word has begun circulating in late-night circles that NBC may be interested in Stern's services once again. A source says Stern has spoken with the network about a number of ideas.

Warren Littlefield, NBC Entertainment president, and Stern have held at least two chats, according to Tuesday's Daily Variety.

There is a widespread belief in the TV industry that NBC is casting a wide net for possible replacements for Conan O'Brien ("Late Night With Conan O'Brien"). But a search should not necessarily be construed as a signal that NBC is about to dump its new late-night guy. Indeed, November is a make-or-break month for O'Brien: NBC will have its first November-to- November comparison, and if "Late Night's" ratings have fallen, they may kiss Conan goodbye.

Meanwhile, an NBC spokeswoman called the Stern talks "very informal."
