By Victoria Withey -- E! Online -- January 14, 2002 Not even a typically bleak Seattle downpour could put the damper on Conan O'Brien's good humor Saturday as he tied the knot. The lanky “Late Night” goofball wed local ad executive Liz (sic) Powel--whom he met during a skit on his show--in a private ceremony attended by family, close friends and coworkers. "Sorry about the rain," a giddy O'Brien quipped to onlookers as he and the new missus ducked under an oversized umbrella and sprinted from the St. James Cathedral to the reception site. The nuptials were officiated by O'Brien's longtime friend and Harvard roommate, the Reverend Paul O'Brien (no relation). "She's a beautiful, beautiful, wonderful person in all ways," the minister told the local KING-TV when asked to descibe the bride. For the afternoon wedding, the bride wore a long white empire-waisted dress covered by a floor-length lace coat. She carried a matching purse and red roses. The groom wore a dark suit with a white shirt and cream tie to match the bride, who is the daughter of Seattle Dixieland band leader Jake Powel. Notable well-wishers in attendance included Lisa Kudrow (who, like O'Brien, is an alum of the L.A.-based Groundlings comedy troupe). Powel caught Conan's eye when she appeared in a Late Night bit about advertising. After dating for more than a year, he proposed in July. A former Harvard Lampoon president, O'Brien, 38, nabbed the “Late Night” spot in 1993 after stints as a writer for “Saturday Night Live” and “The Simpson's”. This was his first trip down the aisle. Before Powel, he had dated talent executive Lynn Kaplan for five years until 1999. There's no immediate word on honeymoon plans. |
