By Frances Katz -- Boston Herald (MA) -- September 14, 1993 -- Section: NEWS, Page: 051 How did Conan O'Brien's first hour in show business go over at his old haunt, the Harvard Lampoon magazine? In recent years, the Lampoon offices have sent O'Brien and other graduates off to crack jokes for David Letterman, "Saturday Night Live," cable's Comedy Central and other bastions of TV comedy, giving Cambridge's Ivy League citadel a reputation for cranking out top notch comedic talent along with doctors, lawyers, brokers and presidents. The most recent crop of Lampoon staffers gathered together last night at the Lampoon offices to watch one of its most famous alums take command of his own late night talk fest. O'Brien's Ivy League brethren gave the show a resounding thumbs up. "Well, after seeing the first show, Lampoon Ibis Bill Woo, 21, said, "The new hyperactive Conan will definitely put the critics to rest . . . It was a great show. The dozen or so Lampoon staffers gathered to watch the premiere raved about O'Brien's comic bits including his small town newspaper skits." Lampoon senior Brian Kelley, 21, said O'Brien had more poise than he expected and the show definitely had the host's signature all over it. His sense of humor was very apparent after just one show. And he had a great choice of guests. "Actually, during the show, he revealed several Harvard Lampoon secrets, which of course we can't reveal to you," Woo added. "I can definitely guarantee you that somebody will be here watching every night and the TV will definitely be tuned to 'BZ." Copyright (c) 1993 Boston Herald |
