Conan O'Brien stars in Finnish-language campaign broadcast

The re-election campaign of Tarja Halonen, the Finnish head of state, has once again been helped by Late Night, the US talkshow hosted by Conan O'Brien.

According to the Friday issue of Ilta-Sanomat, a Finnish tabloid, in the show that aired in the US on Wednesday, Mr O'Brien stars in a spoof party political broadcast alongside Ulla Suokko, an artist who has lived in New York for 14 years.

In the segment Mr O'Brien and Ms Suokko play a Finnish couple discussing, in Finnish, President Halonen's term.

"Life has certainly been good to us under President Halonen," reads the subtitle text in a screen capture from the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) programme.

Ilta-Sanomat adds that after the segment the studio audience began to chant the president's first name.

In the previous night's programme Mr O'Brien displayed a picture of himself and another of President Halonen side by side and said he had realised why Late Night was so popular in Finland: the similarity of appearance.

He then added that he wanted President Halonen to win because the country had supported Late Night and the incumbent looked exactly like Mr O'Brien.

Finland's Subtv is to air the first programme on Friday and the second one on Monday.
